EL ELYON – GOD MOST HIGH

EL ELYON – GOD MOST HIGH (NB: many links have “popups”) – “O magnify the LORD with me and let us exalt His Name together.” (Ps 34:3-note) God reveals Himself by this great Name in Genesis 14 where Abram, with 318 men and with God Most High, defeated 4 kings who had defeated the king of Sodom and captured Lot (Ge 14:8-17). On returning from the great victory, Abram was greeted by Melchizedek King of Salem, priest of God Most High (El Elyon) who declared “Blessed be Abram of God Most High (El Elyon), Possessor of Heaven and Earth and blessed be God Most High (El Elyon) Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” (Ge 14:18-20)

He is El Elyon because He is sovereign over all creation (note sovereign ends with “reign”!) El Elyon reigns as “God in heaven above and on earth beneath” (Joshua 2:11). He alone is “called the LORD…the MOST HIGH over all the earth.” (Ps 83:18NLT-note) El Elyon has all dominion over all life, death, times, epochs, nations, kings, rulers…in short over ALL (Isa 45:6-7, Dt 32:39, Da 2:20-22-note, 1Sa 2:6, Job 5:18, Isa 30:26). While El Elyon’s sovereignty is a difficult truth for some saints to receive, we do well to remember that His sovereignty is always perfectly balanced by His infinite GOODNESS. And so whatever El Elyon allows in our lives, be it good or evil (albeit He is never the Author of evil), He is the God Most High and as such is capable of causing all our circumstances to work together for our good and His glory (Ro 8:28-note, Ge 50:20). Indeed, can we not confidently declare, if El Elyon “is for us, who (or what) can ever be against us (Ro 8:31KJV)?”

What would our lives look like if we allowed God’s Spirit (cp 2Cor 3:3-note) to “write (the truth about El Elyon) on the tablet of our heart (Proverbs 3:3, 17:3)? What fear would the truth of El Elyon’s powerful, perfect love cast out? (1Jn 4:18) What “impossible situation” (like Abram going against 4 kings!) would we believe possible for God Most High, for Whom nothing is too difficult (Ge 18:14, Jer 32:27) and Whose power is not limited (Nu 11:23)? May God grant us His enabling grace to run into the strong tower of the Name of God, El Elyon (Pr 18:10-note), Who promises that “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty” (Ps 91:1-note). As we experience El Elyon’s presence and power, may we too be able to testify “It has seemed good to me to declare the signs and wonders which the MOST HIGH GOD has done for me.” (Da 4:2-note)

As you meditate on God’s great Name, El Elyon, let me encourage you to listen to Robin Mark’s great song ALL IS WELL (below) – When I suffered a severe, life threatening break of my left hip in May, 2011 at age 65, God used the truth of the song ALL IS WELL to remind me that He is God Most High God, El Elyon, Who  “humbles and He exalts (and) Who lowers us to raise us so that we can sing His praises. Whatever is His way, ALL IS WELL .” May God show Himself to you in a very real, powerful and personal way as you ponder His great Name, El Elyon and may the truth of His Name cause you to sing “Whatever is His way, all is well” in Christ.
