EL ROI – THE GOD WHO SEES

EL ROI – THE GOD WHO SEES (Chart on El Roi) (NB: many links have “popups”) – How significant are the Names of God? Daniel 11:32-note says “the people who KNOW their God will display strength and take action.” To KNOW God’s Names is to KNOW His character, His attributes. In short it is to KNOW Him intimately, which in turn strengthens our faith & gives us boldness to “take action.” In Genesis 16 we encounter another of God’s great Names, EL ROI.

In Genesis 16  Abram & Sarai have not yet had the son God had promised, so Sarai ‘runs ahead’ of God & tells Abram “go in to my maidHagar & Abram “listened to the voice of Sarai (instead of the voice of God!)” (Genesis 16:2) & Hagar had a son but was “despised in (Sarai’s) sight.” (Genesis 16:4) Oh, how we all need to remember the truth that God’s delays are not necessarily denials! So Sarai treated (Hagar) harshly & she fled from her presence. Now the Angel of Jehovah found her by a spring of water in the wilderness…(and promised to) greatly multiply (her) descendants…(through her son) Ishmael” (Genesis 16:6, 7, 10-11) “Then (Hagar) called the name of the LORD Who spoke to her, “Thou art EL ROI (GOD WHO SEES)” Notice how in running from Sarai, Hagar encounters Jehovah, the God Who “is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble, (Who) knows those who take refuge in Him.” (Nahum 1:7) Perhaps like Hagar you have run from a difficult situation in which you were unfairly treated. Take comfort in the truth that EL ROI SEES your distress “For the ways of a man (woman) are before the EYES of the LORD and He watches ALL his (her) paths.” (Pr 5:21-note) When the “righteous cry…the LORD hears” (Ps 34:17) and He knows how you’ve have been spoken to or treated. EL ROI sees the outcast on their knees and in His omnipotence will assure that it all works together for good to those who love Him (Romans 8:28-note) and that “in all these things we are more than conquerors through Christ Who loved us” (Romans 8:37-note). His Word is trustworthy even as He reminded fearful Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:8) declaring “I am watching over My Word to perform it.” (Jeremiah 1:12) We also see a description of EL ROI in Exodus 3:2 where Jehovah declared “The LORD said, “I have surely SEEN the affliction of My people who are in Egypt & have given heed to their cry because of their taskmasters for I AM AWARE OF (Hebrew = intimately acquainted with) their sufferings.” Child of God, be comforted by the truth that EL ROI sees your suffering & that He is “able to come to the aid of those who are being tested” (Heb 2:18-Note)
PRAYER: Father of our heart, by Your Spirit of Grace (Heb 10:29-note) enable us to fix the eyes of our heart on Jesus, our EL ROI, the Author and Perfecter of our faith, the One Who is ever ready and able to run to our side on hearing our cry for help. (Eph 1:18-note, Heb 12:2-note, Heb 2:18-Note)
